Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Linker alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Save a URL with metadata, store it, index for search, and view/edit via a web UI.
What it still won’t have
- Polished UX, analytics dashboards, and marketing polish
- Hosted service conveniences (backups, uptime SLA, multi-user team features)
- AI-powered automatic tagging or advanced content extraction
- Mobile-first native apps and cross-device syncing provided by vendor
- Vendor support and onboarding
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a self-hosted bookmark manager using Node.js (Express) + Postgres, Meilisearch (or SQLite FTS) for search, and React for the frontend. Core features in scope: save URL (with metadata fetch), tag and edit bookmarks, list and paginated view, full-text search, import/export bookmarks (HTML), user authentication (single-user/passwordless). Out of scope: team/multi-tenant billing, mobile native apps, AI automatic tagging, analytics dashboards. Provide Docker Compose for local deployment, sensible error handling, unit and integration tests for API endpoints, and basic README with setup and backup instructions.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score90
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
