Learning and careers decision

HiBob

Keep paying — reproducing a usable HRIS UI is feasible, but HiBob’s value includes global payroll compliance, mature integrations, enterprise SLAs, and embedded AI/trust features that a lone engineer cannot realistically replicate and operate.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

What a replacement has to do

  • A single-source HR system: store employee records, manage lifecycle workflows (onboard/offboard, time-off, approvals), track time & payroll data, and expose analytics/dashboards.

What it still won’t have

  • Global payroll compliance and country-specific payroll operations
  • Mature integrations and connector catalogue to payroll/providers/SSO
  • Embedded Bob AI capabilities and vendor-managed AI trust controls
  • Enterprise-grade support, SLAs, and audit-ready compliance features

What remains hard

  • Brand trustJoin 5,000+ companies and 1,230,200 people using HiBob right now.
  • Compliance and regulationUK Payroll runs the full process and stays compliant

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted HCM prototype using Postgres, a Node.js/Express API, React frontend, and Auth0 (or SAML) for SSO. In scope: employee directory CRUD, org chart, time-off request UI with approval workflow, time & attendance capture, payroll export as CSV, basic analytics dashboards (headcount, time-off balances), and REST API endpoints. Out of scope: running multi-country payroll filings, advanced compensation benchmarking, and proprietary AI features. Include server-side validation, input sanitization, role-based access checks, error handling, and unit/integration tests for API endpoints and UI flows. Deliver a Docker Compose setup for local dev and deployment instructions.

How the score was reached

  • Pay verdict base20
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 4 cited sources+3
  • Hard moats found in the evidence-3
  • Evidence score25

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
