HEXAGEN.WORLD

A single developer can build a useful minimal replacement (prompt→image→place→browse) in a few weeks, but reproducing the live community scale, moderation, and polish of the hosted product is not realistic without additional ops and moderation work.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All HEXAGEN.WORLD alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • A user writes a text prompt → generate a hex tile image → place the tile onto the shared hex grid → browse and vote on tiles.

What it still won’t have

  • Scale and global multi-user concurrency/real-time collaboration polish
  • Curated UX, moderation, and community features (rules enforcement, reporting)
  • Product polish around discovery, animations, and curated leaderboards

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal collaborative hex-tile AI canvas as a web app using React for frontend, Node.js/Express for backend, Postgres for metadata, and S3-compatible object storage for images. Core features in scope: (1) text-prompt to image generation using a configurable image API (or HuggingFace Diffusers via hosted inference) with retries and size limits; (2) upload/store generated image assets and tile metadata (owner id, prompt, timestamp, hex coordinates) in Postgres; (3) a responsive React hex-grid UI to place and view tiles, with client-side caching and lazy image loading; (4) simple session-based auth (ephemeral cookies) and endpoints to create/view tiles; (5) listing endpoints for recent, weekly, and all-time top tiles (basic vote counter). Out of scope: real-time multi-user editing conflict resolution, advanced moderation workflows, mobile app store packaging, and large-scale CDN tuning. Include error handling for API failures, input validation, and automated unit tests for backend endpoints and core frontend components. Provide Dockerfiles and a single-command deploy script for a small VPS and an example environment file for S3 and image-API keys.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 4 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score60

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
