Customer support decision

Helpwise

A small team or single developer can build a usable shared-email inbox with assignment, saved replies, collision detection, and basic analytics; replicating Helpwise's full omnichannel connectors, mobile apps, AI Assist, and enterprise features is substantially more work and operationally heavier, so keeping the paid product makes sense if you need that breadth.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Helpwise alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Receive messages into a shared inbox, assign/claim conversations, write and send replies (with saved replies), and view basic per-agent analytics.

What it still won’t have

  • Omnichannel connectors (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, SMS, calling) beyond a single email channel
  • Mobile apps (iOS/Android) and polished UX
  • Hosted chatbots, AI Assist autosuggestions, and advanced AI features
  • Enterprise features: SSO, audit logs, priority support, and high-availability infra
  • Built-in knowledge base / help center and advanced integrations marketplace

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a minimal shared-team inbox using Node.js (Express), PostgreSQL, and a React web UI. Scope: 1) OAuth/IMAP connector to ingest emails into a Conversations table and send replies via SMTP/API; 2) Conversation list and thread view with reply composer; 3) Saved replies with variable substitution; 4) Assignment/claim button and simple per-conversation tags; 5) Real-time collision detection using WebSockets so concurrent editors see presence and draft conflicts; 6) A basic analytics endpoint (conversations per agent, avg response time) and an admin dashboard. Out of scope: multi-channel integrations (WhatsApp, Facebook), mobile apps, SSO, advanced automation rules, and chatbots. Include error handling for failed email delivery and OAuth refresh, unit tests for API endpoints, and end-to-end tests for the conversation flow. Provide Dockerfiles and a one-command deployment script for a small VPS.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
