Scheduling and meetings decision
Gather
A small team can build a narrow virtual-office with proximity audio, chat, and a basic map, but reproducing Gather’s full, polished hosted product (scale, integrations, AI features, and brand ecosystem) is expensive and time-consuming—keep paying if you need the complete experience; roll your own only for a limited internal workflow.
Visit website↗Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- A user opens a shared office map, sees nearby people, starts/joins proximity audio/video, and sends chat messages.
What it still won’t have
- Polished, battle-tested UX and polish of Gather's product
- Scale and reliability of Gather's hosted media infrastructure
- Built-in integrations (Google Calendar, Github, Spotify) catalog
- Brand trust and ecosystem of existing customers
- Proprietary AI meeting-notes/transcription implementation (unless you integrate third-party APIs)
What remains hard
- Brand trust

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal virtual office app using React for the web client, Node.js + Express for the backend, Postgres for persistent data, Redis for presence pub/sub, and Janus or Jitsi (hosted or self-hosted) for WebRTC signaling/SFU. In scope: 2D map with movable avatars, user authentication (email or OAuth), presence/location updates, proximity audio/video (attenuation by distance), persistent text chat (channels and DMs), a simple room editor to place tiles/objects, TURN server configuration, and basic logging/metrics. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing, enterprise SSO, advanced AI meeting-notes (you may wire OpenAI/Whisper or a transcription API as optional). Include error handling, unit/integration tests for backend endpoints, and a Docker-based deployment (compose or k8s) with instructions to run on a single VPS.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Evidence score63
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
