Finance and accounting decision
FreshBooks
A basic invoicing+payment workflow is realistic for a single developer to build and run, but replicating FreshBooks' full accounting features, bank integrations, payroll, and support ecosystem is not practical for a small self-hosted replacement.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Create/send invoices, accept payments, record expenses, and produce simple financial reports for a single-user small business.
What it still won’t have
- Double-entry accounting workflows and audit-grade reports
- Bank imports / automatic reconciliation
- Payroll and tax calculation features
- Large-app ecosystem / AppStore integrations
- Award-level customer support and onboarding services
What remains hard
- Brand trust
30M + 30M+ small businesses have used FreshBooks
- Execution quality
Award-winning in-house customer support

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal invoicing and payments web app using React frontend, Node.js + Express backend, Postgres database, and Stripe for payments. In scope: user auth (email/password), client records, invoice CRUD (save, preview PDF, email via SendGrid), Stripe-hosted checkout or payment links, webhook handling to record payments, expense item entry, dashboard with basic revenue and outstanding invoices reports, CSV import/export for data portability, error handling, and unit/integration tests. Out of scope: payroll processing, bank account reconciliation, full double-entry accounting, and multi-currency tax calculations. Deliver deployment scripts (Docker), a minimal CI pipeline, and documentation for backup and restore.

- Evidence score63
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
