Learning and careers decision
Français Avec Marcel App
A capable developer can build a usable web replacement (lessons + quizzes + LLM chat) in several weeks, but reproducing the mobile apps, editorial volume, polish and brand value of the paid product would be difficult without the vendor's content and distribution.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Français Avec Marcel App alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- User reads a themed lesson, completes a short quiz or dictée, sees instant feedback/score, and asks follow-up questions to the chat assistant.
What it still won’t have
- Native iOS/Android apps and app-store distribution
- Polished UX, analytics and growth/marketing features
- Curated library of hundreds of lesson fiches and editorial content
- Brand, reviews and existing user base
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost
No published price
Français Avec Marcel App does not publish a price we could read, so there is nothing to compare against. What building costs is below.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a single-tenant web app (React frontend + Node.js + Express backend + Postgres) that provides themed French orthography lesson pages, a quiz/dictée engine with grading and progress storage, and a chat widget that proxies user questions to an LLM (e.g. OpenAI). In-scope: lesson CMS (editable JSON files or lightweight admin), quiz authoring and runtime, user accounts, progress persistence, daily reminder scheduler, LLM integration, deployment scripts (Docker + managed Postgres on Heroku/AWS RDS) and basic CI. Out of scope: native mobile apps, paid subscription billing, analytics dashboards, and large-scale multi-tenant orchestration. Include error handling, input validation, request retries for the LLM, and automated tests for API endpoints and core quiz grading logic.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 6 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score64
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
