Flodesk
A competent developer can build a useful subset (sending, templates, forms, simple automations) in ~1 week and self-host it, but Flodesk’s polished editor, patented layout tech, deliverability optimizations, and built-in e‑commerce are hard to match and justify keeping the paid product for full functionality.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. What a replacement has to do
- Collect subscribers, design a template, send campaigns, run simple automations, track opens/clicks.
What it still won’t have
- Proprietary deliverability optimizations and reputation/relationships with inbox providers
- Polished template editor and patented layout technology
- Built-in e-commerce/checkout, subscriptions, and abandoned-cart automations
- Deep analytics and reporting comparable to the vendor
- Breadth of native integrations (Shopify, Canva, Zapier, etc.)
What remains hard
- Execution quality
Our patented layout technology lets you design stunning graphics in your emails—no third party design software required.
- Brand trust
Flodesk emails get seen 17% more than industry average.
First-year cost

Paying is—cheaper in year one.
On cash alone, building overtakes the subscription at 1 seat.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted email-marketing service using Node.js (Express), Postgres, and a transactional email API (SendGrid). Include: subscriber CRUD + CSV import/export; segmented lists; hosted opt-in forms and simple landing page templates; a template editor supporting custom fonts and brand colors (HTML templates); campaign send flow using SendGrid with unsubscribe handling; a basic workflow engine to trigger welcome and abandoned-cart emails; basic analytics (opens/clicks) stored in Postgres and one CSV export report. Out of scope: payment/checkout, multi-seat billing, advanced analytics dashboards, third-party integrations beyond SendGrid. Include error handling, input validation, and automated tests for API endpoints and core workflows.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Evidence score63
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
