Elmo

Technical users should self-host Elmo (official repo available) rather than rebuild; deploying the provided Docker Compose stack yields the same functionality with modest setup and low monthly costs.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Elmo alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Run configured prompts across multiple AI models; collect and normalize model responses and citations; store prompts, responses, and citation metadata in Postgres; run citation-analysis and share-of-voice aggregation jobs; present results in a dashboard (web UI) and export reports.

What it still won’t have

  • Managed hosting/automatic updates
  • Priority support and SLA
  • White-labeling and agency features (custom domain, SSO) if not self-hosting
  • Managed daily backups and usage analytics

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a self-hosted deployment of Elmo from the official GitHub using Docker Compose and Postgres. Stack: Docker Compose, PostgreSQL, Nginx (optional reverse proxy). Core features in scope: clone https://github.com/elmohq/elmo, run elmo CLI init, configure environment (DB URL, AI provider API keys), bring up containers, verify periodic workers run and ingest model responses, seed a sample brand and prompts, verify dashboard pages (prompts, citations, share-of-voice) load and export CSV reports. Out of scope: reimplementing Elmo features or UI redesign. Require: error handling for missing API keys, health checks for each service, automated start/stop scripts, a small test suite that verifies API endpoints and a smoke test for the worker ingest pipeline.

How the score was reached

  • Self-host verdict base92
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • 2/2 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score99

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
