Learning and careers decision

DLAcademy

You can reproduce the core LMS functionality by self-hosting an open-source project (listed), but you cannot replicate the vendor’s proprietary course library, community, and brand value — so keep paying if those matter.

The code exists. It is not what you are paying for.

These 2 projects are real, published, and do the core job — and this page still says keep paying. What the subscription buys is content rights, brand trust and content rights, and none of that ships in a repository. Fork one anyway if you want to. Go in knowing what it does not carry. What a replacement has to do

  • Users browse a course catalog, play hosted lesson videos, and have progress tracked in their account; admins upload/course-manage content and moderate the community.

What it still won’t have

  • Proprietary course library and content rights (the vendor’s 1,000+ lessons)
  • Existing active community and brand recognition
  • Any paid platform-native features (analytics,課付 support) not exposed publicly

What remains hard

Build a self-hosted LMS by deploying Frappe LMS (https://github.com/frappe/lms) on a single VPS or managed Kubernetes cluster. Stack: PostgreSQL, Redis, Docker, Nginx, Let’s Encrypt, S3-compatible object storage + CloudFront (or equivalent) for video hosting. Core features in scope: user registration/login, course catalog, lesson pages with video playback, per-user progress tracking, admin UI for creating courses/lessons, basic discussion threads/comments, and backups. Out of scope: training new proprietary course content, advanced analytics dashboards, and paid marketplace features. Include sensible error handling, automated DB backups, HTTPS, health checks, and basic unit/integration tests for auth, course CRUD, and progress APIs.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
