Design and diagrams decision
Creately
A single-developer can build a useful, single-user diagramming app (canvas, shapes, persistence, export) in about a week, but reproducing Creately's enterprise features (certifications, multi-user real-time collaboration, AI-powered diagrams, integrations, and managed scaling) is non-trivial and favors keeping the paid service for those needs.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Create and edit diagrams on an infinite canvas, apply shapes/templates, save/load documents, and export to SVG/PDF.
What it still won’t have
- Real-time multi-user collaboration (live cursors, concurrent editing)
- Enterprise-grade compliance and certified security posture
- Built-in AI diagram generation and advanced automation
- Large template/catalog breadth and integrations (Teams, Slack, Confluence, etc.)
- Hosted scaling, uptime SLAs, and managed support
What remains hard
- Compliance and regulation
ISO 27001, SOC 2 - Type 2, Data Residency & Up-time SLAs
- Compliance and regulation
SOC2-Type II, ISO 27001 Certified, HIPAA and GDPR Compliant

Creately does not publish a price we could read, so there is nothing to compare against. What building costs is below.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal single-user diagram editor using React + Konva for the canvas, Node.js + Express and Postgres for persistence. In scope: infinite canvas with pan/zoom, add/move/resize basic shapes, a small template library, save/load documents to Postgres, SVG/PNG/PDF export, user sign-up/login, and basic version history. Out of scope: real-time collaborative editing, enterprise compliance certifications, advanced AI diagram generation, and integrations. Include error handling, input validation, and unit/integration tests for API endpoints.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Hard moats found in the evidence-3
- Evidence score61
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
