Cramberry

A small team or capable technical user can build a useful replacement (core upload → LLM-generated flashcards/quizzes) in a few weeks using existing OSS components; Cramberry's product polish, apps, and support are what you'd give up.

Not priced

No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.

No published price to break even against.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Upload source (PDF/YouTube/image) → extract text (OCR/transcript) → chunk + prompt LLM to generate flashcards/quizzes/notes → store study set and present study UI with spaced-repetition

What it still won’t have

  • Polished iPhone/iPad apps and (coming) Android app
  • Priority customer support and commercial SLAs
  • Polish of multi-format in-browser readers (PDF side-by-side, video player integration)
  • Productized analytics, scaling, and operational experience

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a single-tenant web app (Next.js + React frontend, Node backend, Postgres DB) that accepts PDF/image uploads and YouTube links, runs OCR (Tesseract) and transcription (Whisper or provider), chunks text, calls OpenAI-compatible LLMs via an API to produce flashcards, quizzes, and summaries, stores study sets in Postgres, and provides a basic study UI (flashcard flip, quiz with auto-feedback, per-card mastery tracking and spaced-repetition scheduler). Include user auth (email), file storage (S3), error handling, logging, and unit/integration tests for parsing and LLM flows. Out of scope: mobile apps, advanced analytics, multi-tenant billing, and offline sync.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • 2 cited sources+1
  • Evidence score53

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
