The product is fully open source and runnable from its official GitHub repo, so a technical user should clone and run or build that project rather than reimplementing it.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All ClaudeUsageBar alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Stand up the existing open-source macOS menu-bar app: fetch usage by sending requests to Anthropic/claude.ai using the user's session cookie, parse returned usage data, display usage and status in a menu-bar popup, and trigger local notifications at usage thresholds.

What it still won’t have

  • Automatic signed distribution (unless you sign and notarize builds yourself)
  • Anywhere automatic updates unless you add an update channel
  • Polished release packaging and any pre-built binaries the project maintainer publishes

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a runnable macOS menu-bar app by cloning and building the existing Swift project at https://github.com/Artzainnn/ClaudeUsageBar. Stack: Swift (SwiftUI/AppKit), Xcode 14+, macOS 12+ target, use macOS Keychain for secure cookie storage. In-scope features: install and build instructions, UI to paste and save claude.ai session cookie, periodic and on-demand fetch of usage endpoints using the stored cookie, parse usage and reset times, native menu-bar popup showing session/weekly usage bars and service status, local notifications at 25/50/75/90% thresholds, Accessibility permission flow for global shortcut, and simple logging. Out of scope: reimplementing the app in another language, cross-platform builds (Windows/Linux), and payment/auto-update infrastructure. Require: secure local storage of cookie, graceful handling of network and auth errors with user-facing messages, unit tests for parsing logic, and a README with build/run and cookie-extraction steps.

How the score was reached

  • Self-host verdict base92
  • 2/2 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score96

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
