AI assistants and search decision
ChatGPT Toolbox
A small team or capable technical user can realistically build and maintain a minimal ChatGPT Toolbox replacement in a multi-week effort; open-source agent/assistant projects exist as prior art to accelerate development.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All ChatGPT Toolbox alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Send a prompt to an LLM and display the assistant response (single-user, local/personal subscription flow)
What it still won’t have
- Proprietary UI polish and branded UX
- Vendor-supplied integrations and managed billing
- Commercial support and updates
- Any closed-source plugins or proprietary data the vendor may provide
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a single-tenant ChatGPT-style toolbox web app using Next.js (React) frontend, Node.js/Express backend, Postgres (or SQLite) for storage, and OpenAI-compatible API for LLM calls. In scope: prompt/template editor, run prompt workflow, store and list templates, persistent logs of runs, simple user authentication (email+password), graceful error handling, unit/integration tests for API routes, and deployment scripts for a VPS or Vercel + managed Postgres. Out of scope: multi-tenant enterprise billing, plugins marketplace, and proprietary model training. Provide automated tests and basic monitoring/alerts.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score64
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
