Email and newsletters decision
Canary Mail
A technically capable developer can build a narrow replacement (unified inbox + AI summaries/drafts + basic encryption) in a few months, but reproducing Canary's cross-platform polish, packaging, app-store presence, device licensing, and enterprise security features at the same quality is a larger effort and favors continuing to pay for the commercial product.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Provide a unified email inbox that syncs with IMAP/Exchange accounts, index/search mail, generate AI summaries/draft replies locally or via an LLM API, and send/receive mail with encryption support.
What it still won’t have
- Polished native clients across macOS, Windows, iOS and Android
- Built-in cross-device licensing & sync handled by vendor
- Integrated enterprise-grade security features (turnkey PGP/SecureSend/HIPAA-ready flows)
- Read receipts, tracker-blocking and in-app analytics implemented by Canary
- App-store distribution and one-click install experience

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal secure email client as an Electron app with a Node.js backend and SQLite for storage. In scope: IMAP/SMTP and OAuth account sync (one account), local incremental full-text search (SQLite FTS), an email list+thread UI, AI summary & reply generation via a configurable LLM backend (support either local llama.cpp or a remote API), basic PGP encrypt/decrypt for sending/receiving, and tests + error handling for network failures and corrupt mail. Out of scope: mobile apps, cross-device licensing, enterprise admin console, read-receipts analytics dashboard. Include unit tests for mail sync and AI integration, integration test for send/receive flows, and CI that runs tests.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score67
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
