Email and newsletters decision
Campaign Monitor
A small team can build a useful, lower-cost campaign sender and basic automation, but Campaign Monitor’s deliverability services, integrations catalogue, inbox-testing, AI features, and agency tooling are hard to match — keep paying if those matter.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Design email → choose recipient segment → send via SMTP/transactional API → track opens/clicks and basic analytics
What it still won’t have
- Deliverability team and expert deliverability services
- Inbox preview and spam-filter testing tooling
- Access to Campaign Monitor’s built-in integrations catalogue
- Agency features (private labeling, subaccount billing, dashboard widgets)
- AI-powered features (AI Writer, AI Email Booster) and polished UI
What remains hard
- Integration maintenance
Campaign Monitor seamlessly connects to hundreds of pre-built apps and integrations so you can seamlessly connect your e-commerce platform, CRM, or website.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted email marketing service using Node.js (Express), React for the editor UI, Postgres for storage, and SendGrid (or Mailgun) as the transactional SMTP provider. In scope: contact import/export (CSV), simple segment filters and custom fields, embeddable signup form and hosted signup page, drag-and-drop or block-based HTML email editor that stores templates, campaign send flow using the transactional API with unsubscribe handling, and basic reporting (sends, opens, clicks, bounces). Out of scope: advanced deliverability consultancy, inbox preview across clients, AI content generation, multi-tenant agency features, and prepaid billing. Include error handling, input validation, API tests for send/subscribe/report endpoints, and deployment scripts (Docker + Docker Compose).
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
