Learning and careers decision

Busuu Premium

A single developer can build a narrow lesson-and-quiz web app with audio and basic pronunciation scoring; reproducing Busuu's expert content, large native-speaker community, and brand value is not realistic, so keeping a paid subscription makes sense for full features.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

What a replacement has to do

  • Deliver short lessons + quizzes, record/playback student audio, track progress and streaks, and show corrective feedback from experts/community.

What it still won’t have

  • Access to Busuu's expert-created course curriculum
  • Large community of native speakers for corrective feedback
  • Brand recognition and trust from 120M users
  • Polished, cross-platform mobile apps and production UX polish
  • Any proprietary certification or business features

What remains hard

  • Brand trustTrusted by our global community of 120 million learners
  • Content rightsCOURSES CREATED BY EXPERTS

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal language-learning web app using React for the frontend, Node.js + Express (or FastAPI) for the backend, and Postgres for storage. In scope: lesson content CRUD, lesson player with text/audio prompts, quiz types (multiple choice, short answer), user auth (email/password), progress/XPs and spaced-review scheduling, browser audio recording and upload to S3, basic pronunciation scoring via a third-party STT API, and a simple admin UI to add lessons. Out of scope: mobile app stores, community peer-review system, paid subscriptions, certification. Include robust error handling, input validation, and unit/integration tests for API endpoints.

How the score was reached

  • Pay verdict base20
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 2 cited sources+1
  • Hard moats found in the evidence-3
  • Evidence score23

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
