Learning and careers decision

Biblemate

A minimal self-hosted or local-first replacement (reading plan, progress, bookmarks, offline) is realistic for a single technical builder, but reproducing the vendor's polish, App Store distribution, curated study resources, and ongoing product support is not covered by a small DIY scope.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • Open today's reading → view passage text → mark as read / highlight / add note → progress advances and next reminder scheduled.

What it still won’t have

  • Polish, UX refinements, and App Store distribution handled by the vendor
  • Curated study notes/commentaries and cross-reference content if proprietary
  • Existing user analytics, reviews, and trust/brand
  • Ongoing support and multi-platform QA across device models

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a cross-platform mobile Bible-reading app using React Native + Expo, bundling a SQLite (better-sqlite3 or expo-sqlite) local database for scripture and reading-plan metadata. Core features in scope: (1) one-year reading plan engine and per-day passages UI; (2) local persistence of progress, bookmarks, highlights, and freeform notes; (3) offline-first data access from bundled DB; (4) local scheduled push notifications for daily reminders (use Expo Notifications); (5) simple study pane showing commentary/cross-references from bundled content; (6) unit and integration tests for plan logic and persistence. Out of scope: multi-translation purchase flows, server-side user accounts, cloud sync, paid analytics, and in-app purchases. Include error handling for DB reads/writes, notification permission denial, and corrupted import files; provide automated tests for reading-plan progression, marking passages read, and data migration scripts; document build and App Store / Play Store packaging steps.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • 2 cited sources+1
  • Evidence score53

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
