Email and newsletters decision
beehiiv
A competent developer can build a usable newsletter + send stack and host landing pages in ~1 week, but beehiiv's ad network, recommendation marketplace, deliverability optimizations, and integrated podcast monetization are nontrivial platform features you'd lose by DIY.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Collect subscribers, compose newsletters, host landing pages, and send email campaigns
What it still won’t have
- Native Ad Network / marketplace liquidity (sell ads for you)
- Recommendation network and cross-publisher discovery
- Optimized deliverability and reputation management at scale
- Built-in monetization storefronts (sponsorships, recommendations)
- Integrated podcast hosting, audio features, and IAB analytics
What remains hard
- Marketplace liquidity
beehiiv combines powerful newsletter features, a no-code website builder, advanced analytics, and the industry's largest native ad network in one platform.
- Marketplace liquidity
Our built-in ad network does the selling for you, connecting your content with global brands.

Paying is—cheaper in year one.
On cash alone, building overtakes the subscription at 1 seat.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted newsletter platform using Next.js for frontend, Postgres for storage, Node/Express API, and SendGrid (or Mailgun) for delivery. In scope: subscriber signup (double opt-in), admin UI to create/edit posts, rich-text HTML email generation, scheduled sends, public landing pages with subscribe forms, basic open/click analytics, webhooks for integrations, tests for signup flow and send pipeline, and Docker deployment scripts to a VPS. Out of scope: ad marketplace, cross-publisher recommendation network, built-in podcast hosting, dynamic ad insertion, and enterprise SSO. Include error handling, retries for sends, monitoring alerts, and unit + integration tests.

- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Hard moats found in the evidence-3
- Evidence score32
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
