Security and privacy decision

Validemail.co

A capable developer can implement a useful self-hosted email validator (CSV + API + basic SMTP probing) in a few weeks, but matching the vendor's production-quality datasets, IP reputation, scale, and continuously updated provider threat lists is expensive and operationally intensive.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Validemail.co alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Accept an email (single or CSV), run checks (syntax, DNS/MX, catch-all, SMTP probe, disposable/generic detection), return a structured verdict per address via API or UI and allow bulk downloads.

What it still won’t have

  • Ongoing threat intelligence and continuously updated disposable/blacklist provider lists
  • IP reputation, warm sending IPs and global infrastructure optimizations for SMTP probing at scale
  • Enterprise SLAs, anti-abuse systems and fraud signals tuned from large datasets
  • Polish of a production UI, analytics/dashboard and no-code integrations maintained by vendor

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted email validation service using Node.js (Express) + PostgreSQL + BullMQ (Redis) + React for a small web UI. Core features in scope: API endpoints for single validation and bulk CSV upload, worker queue to run per-address checks (syntax, DNS/MX lookup, disposable-provider lookup using an extracted list, and an SMTP connect/probe with safe timeouts and error handling), result storage and CSV result download, basic auth for a single admin user, and a simple dashboard showing job status. Out of scope: billing, IP warmup for outbound SMTP, advanced anti-abuse heuristics, enterprise SLAs. Require robust error handling, timeouts for external network ops, retries with backoff, and unit/integration tests for API, workers, and CSV parsing.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score64

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
