Forms and surveys decision

Typeform

A competent developer can build a useful subset (forms, submissions, webhooks, basic analytics) within a week, but Typeform's proprietary response volume and enterprise compliance features are durable advantages that are costly to replicate, so keeping paid Typeform makes sense for teams needing those capabilities.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

What a replacement has to do

  • Create a form builder UI, persist responses, run conditional logic, deliver responses via webhooks/integrations, and provide basic analytics/export.

What it still won’t have

  • AI-moderated large-scale Research Flow (participant recruitment, AI moderation, panel access)
  • Growth Flow enrichment and automated multi-channel follow-ups at scale
  • Verified panel recruitment and built-in incentive management
  • Enterprise features: SSO, HIPAA-specific workflows, EU/US data center choices, dedicated account management
  • Extensive integrations catalogue and prebuilt connectors (>500 integrations) and polished no-code automations

What remains hard

  • Proprietary dataWith over 48 million responses collected monthly, Typeform AI builds best-in-class forms proven to get 3.5x more data.
  • Compliance and regulationSSO, HIPAA, GDPR compliance, and your choice of US or EU data center.

Build a minimal Typeform-like app using React (frontend), Node.js + Express (API), Postgres (forms/responses), and S3-compatible storage. Implement: form JSON schema editor (questions, conditional logic, media/file-upload fields), public form rendering and submission endpoint, server-side validation, response storage, webhook delivery to configured endpoints, CSV export and a basic analytics endpoint (response counts and per-question drop-off), embed script/snippet, and a small admin UI to list forms and responses. Integrate optional OpenAI calls for an 'AI-assisted form draft' endpoint (bill API usage separately). Out of scope: enterprise SSO/HIPAA certification, large-scale panel recruitment, multi-region data residency. Include error handling, input validation, unit tests for critical endpoints, and deployment scripts (Docker + DigitalOcean or AWS ECS).

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
