Study Cards AI

A capable technical user can reproduce the core service (PDF→AI flashcards→Anki export) in about one week and maintain it; StudyCardsAI's main advantages are product polish and scale rather than unreproducible data or infrastructure.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Study Cards AI alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Upload PDF → extract text/images → run LLM to generate Q&A and cloze cards → format as Anki deck (.apkg or Anki import files) → let user download/import.

What it still won’t have

  • Polish and UX refinements (editor, batch workflows, onboarding flows)
  • Payment/subscription management and analytics dashboards
  • Scale, reliability, and monitoring for many concurrent users
  • Any proprietary prompt tuning or undisclosed backend optimizations
  • Planned advanced features like diagram interpretation

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal self-hosted StudyCardsAI replacement using Node.js (Express) backend, React frontend, Postgres for user/deck metadata, S3-compatible object storage for uploaded PDFs, and OpenAI-compatible LLM API for generation. Core features in scope: file upload, PDF text+image extraction (pdf-lib + Tesseract optional), chunking and prompt pipeline to produce Normal and Cloze cards, assemble and export Anki-compatible package or CSV that imports into Anki, simple web UI to upload and download exports, basic user session (email/password or magic link). Out of scope: payments/subscriptions, multi-tenant admin dashboards, advanced diagram interpretation, mobile apps, heavy scaling. Include error handling for failed PDF parsing and API timeouts, logging, and automated tests for PDF upload, generation pipeline, and export output.

  • Evidence score89

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
