Startup Alternatives

A single competent developer can build and run a lightweight, searchable directory replacement in about a week; the site's main durable advantage is its editorial brand, which a clone would lack.

No open-source build does this yet

Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.

What a replacement has to do

  • A searchable web directory of tools grouped by category, each tool page with a short description and hand-checked alternatives; an editor/admin UI for adding/editing entries and categories; a public browse and search UI.

What it still won’t have

  • the site's existing brand and traffic
  • hand-checked editorial history and curation reputation
  • any private editorial processes or unpublished notes
  • possible integrations the site currently links to (login, contributor workflows)

What remains hard

  • Brand trustHand-picked software. Zero algorithms.

Runnable build prompt

Build a searchable, hand-curated software-alternatives directory using Next.js (React) + Tailwind, a Postgres database (or SQLite for single-instance), and Prisma for ORM. Core features in scope: category listing pages, tool detail pages with alternative lists, site-wide full-text search with category filters (Postgres full-text or Lunr as fallback), public submission form creating draft records, and a minimal admin UI to review/publish edits. Out of scope: multi-tenant accounts, payments, advanced analytics, or recommendation algorithms. Include CI-based deployment (Vercel or similar), TLS, basic monitoring/health checks, server-side and unit tests for API routes, and error handling and input validation for submissions and admin actions.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score81

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
