Learning and careers decision
Small Bets
A single competent developer can recreate the core offering (video library + paid one-time access + member chat) in about a week and modest monthly hosting costs; you would sacrifice the vendor's existing community, instructor relationships, and brand/curation.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Small Bets alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- A user discovers a class, purchases one-time access, watches recorded video content, and participates in a member chat for feedback.
What it still won’t have
- Established instructor relationships and curated course acquisition pipeline
- Existing community of 7,728 members and social proof
- Brand recognition, testimonials, and accumulated member trust
- Polish from the vendor's existing content library and moderation workflows
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted membership site for a paid video course library using Next.js (React) + PostgreSQL (Supabase) + AWS S3 + CloudFront for video storage/streaming, Stripe for a one-time payment, and Discourse (or an embeddable forum) for community chat. Core features in scope: account signup/login, Stripe one-time checkout linked to user account, catalog pages with tags and search, per-course video player consuming HLS from CloudFront, admin upload UI that transcodes uploads to HLS and stores metadata in Postgres, gated course access after purchase, and embedding a Discourse forum restricted to members. Out of scope: marketplace for external instructors, live classes, or multi-seat team billing. Include error handling, authentication checks on every gated route, background job for video transcoding, automated backups, basic unit/integration tests for payment and access flows, and a Docker-based deployment with CI (GitHub Actions) and Terraform/CloudFormation to provision S3, CloudFront, RDS, and minimal networking.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- Evidence score86
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
