Websites and hosting decision

Sheet2Site

A single developer can build a usable Google-Sheet-to-site workflow (listing pages, filters, embed) in ~34 hours, but reproducing Sheet2Site's full managed product (templates library, payments, dashboard, enterprise features, support polish) is larger work and better served by continuing to pay for the hosted product.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Sheet2Site alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Author rows in a Google Sheet -> fetch sheet data -> render cards, filters and detail pages -> host static site or provide embeddable script.

What it still won’t have

  • Managed dashboard and account management for multiple domains/sites
  • Polished template library and prebuilt templates
  • Built-in payments/forms integrations and hosted form handling
  • Hosted analytics, chat, and support provided by the vendor
  • Programmatic SEO features, custom templates at extra cost and enterprise features

Build a minimal Sheet2Site clone: use Node.js + Next.js for a small serverless app, or a static-site generator plus one serverless function (Vercel/Netlify). Core features in scope: (1) fetch and normalise a public Google Sheet (CSV export or Sheets API) into a canonical JSON, (2) serverless endpoint to return that JSON with cache headers, (3) Next.js pages/components to render a card grid, detail pages and client-side filters/search with unique filter URLs, (4) an embeddable script that loads the JSON and mounts the UI into a host page, (5) deploy static assets to S3/CloudFront or Vercel and configure HTTPS and custom domain routing. Out of scope: multi-tenant account dashboard, recurring billing, built-in payments, advanced programmatic SEO, and enterprise contract features. Include error handling for failed sheet fetches, caching and TTL, simple unit tests for data parsing and a CI deploy script.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 4 cited sources+3
  • Price verified on pricing page+3
  • Evidence score63

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
