PDFBolt

A competent developer can build a useful HTML/URL-to-PDF API with templates in about a week, but PDFBolt’s AI template generation, EU-hosted GDPR guarantees, uptime SLA, SDK polish, and enterprise features are non-trivial to replicate.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All PDFBolt alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Render user HTML/URL to PDF, store and render Handlebars templates, expose Direct/Sync/Async REST endpoints, deliver PDFs to S3 and return/download links, provide webhook callbacks for async jobs.

What it still won’t have

  • AI-powered template generation from prompts and reference files
  • GDPR-specific EU-hosted processing guarantees and 99.9% uptime SLA
  • Official SDKs for multiple languages and prebuilt integration connectors
  • Enterprise features (priority support, print-production/PDF-X workflows, template creation service)

What remains hard

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal PDF generation API using Node.js (Express), Postgres, Puppeteer (headless Chromium), and AWS S3. Core features: POST /v1/direct to return PDF bytes, POST /v1/sync to return downloadable URL, POST /v1/async to enqueue a job and call a signed webhook when ready; Handlebars-based template storage with CRUD endpoints and real-preview generation; S3 upload with signed URLs; request validation, per-API-key rate limiting, and basic dashboard to manage templates + preview. Out of scope: AI template generation, multi-tenant billing, enterprise SLA, print-production (CMYK/PDF/X). Include logging, error handling, retries for S3/webhook failures, unit and integration tests for endpoints, and Docker deployment config for a single VPS.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
