Cloud storage decision
pCloud
A competent developer can build a useful self-hosted replacement for core storage, sharing and basic backup in ~30 hours, but pCloud's scale, certified data centers, polished cross-platform clients and large user base are durable advantages that are costly to replicate.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Allow users to upload files to remote object storage, retrieve/download them, and create passworded share links; optionally support automatic backup of selected folders from a client.
What it still won’t have
- Global, certified data-center footprint and managed uptime SLAs
- Polished first-party desktop/mobile sync clients
- Built-in media players and specialized file previews
- Lifetime plan options and existing user base
What remains hard
- Infrastructure at scale

- Brand trust
For over a decade, more than 24 million people have chosen us as their trusted cloud storage provider.

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal cloud-storage service using React frontend, Node.js + Express API, Postgres for metadata, and S3-compatible object storage for files. Include: user signup/login, file upload (multipart/presigned), file listing and preview, sharing links with optional password and expiry, basic versioning (store previous object keys), and a background worker to run recurring backups and delete expired shares. Out of scope: mobile/desktop sync clients, media player polish, and multi-region deployments. Include input validation, authentication checks, error handling, and automated tests for upload/download, share link creation, and backup worker.

- Evidence score61
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
