Learning and careers decision
NZ School Reports
A capable technical user can build and run a focused NZC-aligned comment generator and token checkout workflow in about a week and maintain it; the product's value mainly comes from prompt tuning and UX rather than proprietary data or infrastructure.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All NZ School Reports alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Enter a few teacher notes → pick student, subject, year level, achievement level and tone → call an LLM with NZC-tuned prompt to generate a draft comment (consumes a token) → edit and export the final comment.
What it still won’t have
- Pre-tuned NZ Curriculum (NZC) prompt engineering and locally validated phrasing
- Privacy-first de-identified workspace and data handling as advertised
- Token-based, no-subscription purchase UX and existing token pack pricing
- Built-in templates, example comment library, and curated NZ-specific resources
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a single-tenant teacher workspace for NZ-style report comments using Next.js (React) frontend, Node/Express API routes, PostgreSQL (hosted via Supabase) for draft storage and token accounting, Stripe for one-off token purchases, and OpenAI-compatible LLM API for generation. In-scope features: user registration (email), dashboard to select student/subject/year/achievement, adjustable tone/wordcount controls, prompt templates tuned for NZC, LLM call and response handling, token consumption logic, save/edit/export (PDF/CSV/email) drafts, and simple admin page to top-up token packs. Out of scope: training custom LLMs, multi-school billing, and long-term analytics. Require: input validation, rate-limiting, Stripe webhooks for purchases, clear error handling and retries for LLM calls, unit tests for API routes, and end-to-end tests for the core generate→edit→export flow.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 4 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Evidence score89
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
