Analytics and monitoring decision
kpiboard.io
A competent technical user can replicate core dashboarding, ETL and scheduled reporting using open-source tools (Metabase/Grafana + Airbyte + Postgres), but the vendor's managed team, Power BI/Fabric expertise and bespoke consulting are not replaced by self-hosting.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All kpiboard.io alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Ingest business data, transform/warehouse it, and surface dashboards and scheduled reports to users.
What it still won’t have
- A dedicated external BI team providing ongoing consulting and rapid custom work
- Senior-level Microsoft Fabric / Power BI architecture and prebuilt Fabric solutions
- White-glove onboarding, hands-on data modelling and bespoke dashboard development
- Guaranteed service SLAs and managed unlimited requests
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a self-hosted BI stack using Docker on a single VPS: Postgres for warehouse, Airbyte for connectors, dbt (or SQL scripts) for transforms, and Metabase for dashboarding. Core features in scope: connect 5 common sources (Postgres, MySQL, Shopify, Google Ads, CSV/APIs), run nightly ETL jobs, seed metric tables, create role-based access and row-level filtering, schedule daily/weekly PDF and CSV reports emailed to recipients, and host with TLS and automated backups. Out of scope: bespoke Power BI/Fabric authoring, managed consultancy, or custom mobile apps. Include error handling, retry logic for connectors, logging, basic health checks, and automated tests for ETL transforms.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
