Just Budget

A capable developer can build a useful single-user replacement in about a week and maintain it cheaply; no durable moats were evident on the vendor page so self-hosting or rebuilding is realistic.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Just Budget alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Import transactions, categorize them, store them, and generate budget reports and visualizations.

What it still won’t have

  • Hosted product's brand and polish
  • Automatic bank account sync via third-party aggregators (Plaid, TrueLayer)
  • Mobile apps/packaged installers
  • Commercial support and SLAs
  • Any proprietary analytics or paid integrations the vendor provides

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Core features in scope: CSV/OFX transaction import, transaction parsing and normalization, manual and rule-based categorization, budget definitions, monthly/category summary reports and charts, CSV/PDF export, basic email+password auth, and a small admin settings page. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing, bank aggregator integrations, mobile native apps, payroll or tax filing. Include input validation, error handling, background job worker for imports, unit and integration tests, and Docker Compose for local dev and deployment.

How the score was reached

  • Build verdict base78
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 3 cited sources+3
  • Evidence score86

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
