Learning and careers decision
JobAlert.world
A single competent developer can build and run a useful JobAlert replacement (crawler + matching + email + LLM cover letters) in about a week; no durable moats are evident from the supplied pages so building is realistic.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All JobAlert.world alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Crawl company career pages on a schedule, match new postings to saved user criteria, generate an AI cover letter per match, and deliver notifications to users (email).
What it still won’t have
- Polished UX and cross-device polish
- Large index of company pages and broad coverage
- Operational SLAs and high-frequency crawling at scale
- Any proprietary job-matching heuristics or curated alerts
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost
No published price
JobAlert.world does not publish a price we could read, so there is nothing to compare against. What building costs is below.

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal JobAlert replacement as a containerized Node.js (Express) + Postgres app deployed on a single VPS (or Heroku/DigitalOcean). Core features: 1) scheduler (node-cron) that crawls a configurable list of company career page URLs and diffs new postings; 2) HTML parsing and canonicalization for job title, company, location, date, and description; 3) user accounts with saved filter rules; 4) matching engine that finds new jobs per user and records matches in Postgres; 5) LLM integration (OpenAI-compatible client) to generate one cover letter per match and cache it; 6) email delivery via SendGrid/Mailgun with unsubscribe handling; 7) basic web UI to create/manage alerts and view sent matches; 8) logging, error handling, retries, and automated tests for crawler, matching, and email paths. Out of scope: large-scale distributed crawling, paid billing/subscription gateway, mobile apps, and advanced NLP ranking models.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score90
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
