Cloud storage decision
IDrive
Keep paying — IDrive's durable advantages (large-scale storage economics, multi-region infrastructure, and compliance posture) are expensive and time-consuming to replicate for a small team.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Client-side incremental encrypted backup of selected files -> upload objects to object storage -> store metadata and versions in a database -> web UI to view/restore files and manage devices
What it still won’t have
- Global multi-region storage footprint and provider-negotiated egress/ingress economics
- Physical bulk transfer service (IDrive Express)
- Out-of-the-box SOC2 / HIPAA attestation and compliance paperwork
- Polished cross-platform native apps and long-term scaling/optimization
What remains hard
- Infrastructure at scale
90% cheaper than AWS Worldwide locations Immutable storage No fees for egress No fees for API calls
- Compliance and regulation
Protects against ransomware SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA Compliance
- Brand trust

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal encrypted cloud-backup service using: Go for backend, Postgres for metadata, MinIO (S3-compatible) for object storage, React for web UI, and an Electron/CLI client in Node.js. Core features in scope: client-side AES-256 encrypted incremental backup of a selected folder, resumable chunked uploads to S3, metadata API (device registry, file index, versions) with Postgres, web UI to list backups and trigger selective restores, background worker for snapshot retention and dedupe. Out of scope: physical bulk-shipping service, multi-region replication, formal SOC2/HIPAA attestation, mobile native apps. Include error handling, input validation, authentication (JWT + optional SSO), and unit + integration tests for API and client upload/restore paths.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
