Health, home and travel decision
GutBFF
A competent developer can reproduce the core photo-to-score workflow and diary with off-the-shelf vision APIs and a simple backend, but proprietary model quality, clinical validation, Apple ecosystem polish and existing user/data advantages cannot be fully replicated.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All GutBFF alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Take photo of meal → run image-recognition to identify foods → compute gut-health score & predictions → store meal + score in user diary → surface daily/weekly insights in app (gated by subscription).
What it still won’t have
- Any proprietary or product-tuned AI model used by the vendor for 'gut health' inference
- App Store distribution polish, reviews, ratings and existing user base
- Built-in Apple-managed in-app purchase handling and subscription ecosystem (convenience)
- Any curated medical or nutritional datasets the vendor trained on or collected
- Ongoing product UX iterations and brand trust
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal GutBFF-style iOS app and backend: use SwiftUI for iOS client (iOS 17+), Node.js + Express + Postgres for backend, and Vercel or DigitalOcean for hosting. Implement: 1) photo capture and upload from iPhone; 2) server-side image recognition via a hosted vision API (e.g., Google Vision / OpenAI image endpoint) that returns detected foods; 3) a rules-based gut-health scoring engine (in JS) that computes inflammation, antioxidant, pre/probiotic signals, blood-sugar impact and digestibility complexity; 4) REST API to persist meals, scores, and user profile to Postgres; 5) a diary/insights UI with daily/weekly summaries; 6) Apple StoreKit subscription integration and server receipt validation. Explicitly out of scope: training proprietary ML models, clinical-grade diagnostics, multi-user/account management beyond one user account. Require error handling for network failures, invalid images, and API rate limits, automated unit tests for scoring logic, and end-to-end API tests.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Evidence score64
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
