Project and task management decision

GetMomentum

A single developer can build a useful replacement for core task tracking plus a few integrations and simple attribution, but reproducing the full polished product (many integrations, hosted one-click experience, bundled AI, and ongoing lifetime updates) is larger and operationally heavier than a short DIY project.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All GetMomentum alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Log tasks → mark shipped → attribute resulting revenue/analytics changes to the task → surface MRR and streaks on a dashboard.

What it still won’t have

  • Lifetime product updates and polish from the original vendor
  • Built-in integrations beyond the initial small set (Momentum lists ~13 integrations)
  • The hosted one-click experience and bundled Claude-powered features without separate API keys

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Build a self-hosted minimal Action→Outcome tracker using Next.js (React) for the frontend, Node (Express) for the API, PostgreSQL for storage, and Redis for short-term job/state. Deploy to a single VPS (e.g., 2 vCPU, 4GB RAM) or a managed app service. Core features in scope: user accounts/email auth, project/task CRUD, three task views (list, kanban, calendar), task completion that records a timestamp, connectors to Stripe (API key), GitHub (GitHub App or token), and PostHog (API key) to ingest events, a simple attribution engine that matches recent task completions to revenue events (by timestamp + repo/metadata), a dashboard showing MRR, tasks shipped, commits, streaks, XP levels and a milestones panel, and an optional Claude-compatible AI endpoint integration for task decomposition. Out of scope: building or training models, an extensive integrations catalog beyond the three connectors, mobile native apps, and multi-tenant billing. Include background jobs for ingestion and attribution, basic logging/monitoring, error handling for failed connector auth and API errors, and unit/integration tests for API endpoints and the attribution logic.

How the score was reached

  • Partly verdict base52
  • An open-source build was found+5
  • 5 cited sources+3
  • 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
  • Evidence score64

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
