Analytics and monitoring decision
DataEmpire
A small team or capable technical user can build and self-host a useful analytics replacement; established open-source projects (Plausible, Ackee) already implement the core, so building is realistic though it requires multi-week effort for a polished product.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All DataEmpire alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- Collect pageview/beacon events from sites -> store events in a database -> aggregate time-series metrics and simple funnels -> serve a web dashboard and API key-protected endpoints -> show charts and recent events.
What it still won’t have
- Polish, UX and analytics polish of the hosted product (visual design, onboarding flows)
- Scale-managed hosting, DDoS mitigation and high-volume ingest infrastructure
- Commercial integrations, billing, and SLA-backed support
- Any proprietary dashboards, historical retention policies, or inferred insights the vendor may provide
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt
Build a self-hosted lightweight web analytics service using Next.js for the dashboard, Node (Fastify) for the ingest API, and Postgres for event storage (optionally ClickHouse for higher throughput). Core features in scope: 1) a minified JS snippet that sends pageview and custom events to /collect with API-key header; 2) an ingest endpoint that validates payloads, rate-limits, and writes events to Postgres with a timestamped events table; 3) background aggregation jobs (cron) that produce daily/hourly totals and simple retention; 4) a React/Next.js dashboard showing total visitors, pageviews, bounce rate, time series charts, and a recent events table; 5) admin UI for creating/revoking API keys and site settings; 6) simple CSV export. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing, advanced attribution, AI-driven insights, and enterprise compliance. Require error handling for invalid payloads and DB failures, request rate limiting, tests for API endpoints and aggregation logic, and Docker Compose deployment + README with setup steps.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Evidence score86
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
