Project and task management decision

Cozi Gold

A capable developer or small team can build and self-host the core Cozi Gold experience (shared calendar, lists, reminders) in a few weeks using existing open-source examples; the paid product’s AI-driven Max features and brand/support are the main things you won’t replicate cheaply.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.

What a replacement has to do

  • Allow a family to create and share calendar events, add and sync shopping lists and to-dos, and receive reminders/notifications.

What it still won’t have

  • AI features in Cozi Max (AI Event Import, AI Recipe Creator, AI Meal Planner)
  • VIP customer support and company-run support channels
  • Cozi’s brand, app-store presence, and product polish

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Build a minimal self-hosted replacement for Cozi Gold using Next.js (React) for the web frontend, Node/Express for the API, PostgreSQL for persistent storage, Redis for pub/sub and sessions, and SendGrid for email. In scope: user accounts and family grouping (invite/accept), shared calendar with color-coded events and event search, shared shopping lists and to-do lists with item check/uncheck and ordering, reminder scheduling and sending (email + web push), agenda email generation, and an admin toggle for ad-free experience. Out of scope: AI features (email-to-event import, recipe generation, meal planner), mobile native apps, analytics dashboards, and third-party calendar federation. Require: input validation, authorization tests, automated unit/integration tests for API endpoints, background worker for reminders, basic Docker-based deployment scripts, and error handling with logging and alerting.

  • Evidence score67

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
