Project and task management decision
ClickUp
A small team can build a usable tasks+docs+AI-QA workspace, but ClickUp's value relies on enterprise compliance, scale, many integrations, and agent marketplace — costly moats that make full parity impractical for most DIY efforts.

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. What a replacement has to do
- Manage tasks and docs + ask workspace questions via an AI assistant that uses your documents for context.
What it still won’t have
- Enterprise certifications, compliance guarantees (SOC2/ISO/HIPAA) from vendor
- Out-of-the-box integrations and managed connectors
- Scale, uptime SLAs, and 24/7 managed support
- Proprietary 'Super Agent' orchestration and prebuilt agent marketplace
- Polished multi-model routing, billing for AI credits, and built-in workspace migration tools
What remains hard
- Network effects
The more your team uses Brain², the more it knows, the more useful it gets for everyone.
- Compliance and regulation

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted ClickUp-like workspace using: Postgres, Elasticsearch (or OpenSearch), Node.js (Express) backend, React frontend, and OpenAI-compatible APIs for embeddings + LLM. Core features in scope: user/workspace auth and roles, CRUD for projects/tasks, collaborative Markdown docs with version history, document indexing and vector search, an 'Ask my Workspace' chat that returns LLM answers with source links, and a basic task board UI. Out of scope: multi-tenant enterprise billing, SOC2/ISO certifications, mobile apps, built-in connectors to 3rd-party SaaS (only include Google Drive fetch as optional), and a marketplace of prebuilt agents. Include error handling, input validation, tests for API endpoints, and deployment scripts (Docker Compose and a one-click deploy to a single VPS).
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Pay verdict base20
- An open-source build was found+5
- 5 cited sources+3
- Price verified on pricing page+3
- Hard moats found in the evidence-6
- Evidence score25
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
