Calma
A single developer can reproduce the core voice-dump → task extraction → habit-tracking workflow using existing OSS pieces, but shipping a polished, privacy‑safe, App-Store‑grade iOS product with on-device ML and cross-device sync is multi-week work and requires more ops and UX polish than a minimal replacement.

Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All Calma alternatives, with the arithmetic →
What a replacement has to do
- 1) capture voice recordings and convert to text (on-device or cloud STT); 2) parse transcription to extract tasks, priorities, and due dates (NLP); 3) store tasks, journal entries, and habit state in a local database with simple sync; 4) habit-tracking grid UI and daily planner task UI; 5) build iOS home-screen widgets and package the SwiftUI app for App Store.
What it still won’t have
- Polished, App-Store‑grade iOS UX and animations
- Polished on-device ML optimizations and privacy guarantees
- Cross-device sync and account infrastructure
- Ongoing A/B tuned AI prompts and model improvements
- App Store presence and user acquisition handled by the product owner
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance

The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal Calma-like iOS app using SwiftUI, Combine, and SQLite (or CoreData) with optional lightweight cloud sync (Supabase or Firebase). In-scope: (1) voice recording UI and integration with either on-device speech recognition (Speech framework) or a cloud STT API; (2) a small NLP service (Flask or FastAPI) that accepts transcriptions and returns extracted tasks, priorities, due dates, and mood tags (implement rule-based extraction + small transformer prompt pipeline); (3) local persistence for tasks, habits, and journal entries, daily planner UI, and a pixel-grid habit view; (4) home-screen widget showing today's tasks; (5) basic onboarding, settings, and privacy mode (local-only data option). Out of scope: polished App-Store marketing, paid subscription handling, analytics pipeline, advanced ML model training, and multi-user account management. Include error handling, retry logic for network calls, unit tests for parsing/NLP, and end-to-end UI tests for core flows.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Partly verdict base52
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- Evidence score60
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
