Health, home and travel decision
Calm
A small technical team can build a usable meditation player and subscription service quickly, but Calm's proprietary content library, celebrity narrators, and brand scale are durable advantages that a rebuild would lack.
Visit website↗Open-source builds that already do this
Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need — the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship.
What a replacement has to do
- Provide a searchable library of guided-audio sessions and sleep stories, user auth and paid subscriptions, stream audio to web/mobile clients, track simple user progress/check-ins.
What it still won’t have
- Proprietary library of 500+ Sleep Stories and ongoing weekly additions
- Celebrity narrators and licensed content
- Calm-branded research programs and Calm Science-backed assets
- Cross-platform native apps (Apple TV, Watch, WearOS, Samsung Health) and integrations
- Large userbase, brand recognition, and accumulated reviews
What remains hard
- Brand trust
Calm - The #1 app for Meditation and Sleep
- Brand trust
Over 2 million 5-star reviews.
- Content rights
Our entire library of more than 500+ Sleep Stories , with new stories added every week

Paying is—cheaper in year one.
On cash alone, building overtakes the subscription at 1 seat.

What we assumed
The verdict above measures whether you could build it. This one is only about money.
Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted Calm-like web service using React (Next.js) frontend, Node.js (Express) API, Postgres, and S3-compatible storage. In scope: user auth (email/password), Stripe subscription checkout (monthly), upload UI for admin to add audio files and metadata, searchable catalog, streaming audio player with resume position, basic sleep/check-in tracking, and a small admin role. Out of scope: celebrity-voiced content, mobile native apps, third-party integrations, and automated content creation. Include error handling, input validation, and unit/integration tests; provide Dockerfiles and a deployment guide for a single VPS + managed Postgres and S3.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Pay verdict base20
- An open-source build was found+5
- 3 cited sources+3
- 3/3 assessment runs agreed+4
- Hard moats found in the evidence-3
- Evidence score29
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time — so the same evidence always produces the same number.
