Buildtheidea
A technical user can reproduce the searchable idea library, gated one-time purchase, and export/bookmark features in about a week; the main proprietary value (the larger ProvenTools catalogue, ongoing curated drops, and checkout handled by ProvenTools) would be missing.

Not priced
No pricing page we fetched carried a figure, so there is nothing to compare against. The build side is still real.
$100one-off40 h to build
$20/mo3 h/mo upkeep
No published price to break even against.
No open-source build does this yet
Nothing published replaces this one, so a replacement starts from an empty file. Here is what it would have to cover.
What a replacement has to do
- Browse idea entries, run semantic search across idea seed content, view a 13-section build prompt for an idea, save/export ideas, and gate premium items behind a one-time purchase.
What it still won’t have
- ProvenTools-hosted checkout, billing, and refunds
- The bundled ProvenTools Library catalogue (650 curated ideas + ongoing monthly drops)
- Any proprietary ProvenTools features such as their ProvenScore and integrated growth tools
- Built-in account upgrade/upgrade-migration handled by ProvenTools
What remains hard
- Product polish and ongoing maintenance
First-year cost

Buildtheidea does not publish a price we could read, so there is nothing to compare against. What building costs is below.

Runnable build prompt
Build a minimal self-hosted 'idea library' web app using Next.js (React) + Tailwind, SQLite (via Prisma) for content and entitlement storage, and Typesense for semantic search (open-source) with optional embeddings via OpenAI or a local embeddings provider. Core features in-scope: 1) import a JSON/CSV catalogue of ideas and serve paginated listing and detail pages; 2) semantic search endpoint using Typesense + embedding pipeline; 3) Stripe one-time purchase flow that gates premium idea records and records entitlements in the DB; 4) user bookmarks and export-to-Markdown/PDF; 5) simple admin UI to add/edit ideas and upload CSV imports; 6) tests for import, search, purchase gating, and exports, and error handling for failed payments and search errors. Out of scope: multi-tenant billing abstraction, automated monthly drops, and proprietary ProvenScore algorithms. Provide Docker Compose for local dev, CI to run tests, clear README for deployment to a small VPS (e.g., DigitalOcean) and instructions to connect Typesense and Stripe keys.
How we checked
How the score was reached
- Build verdict base78
- 2 cited sources+1
- Evidence score79
The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
