Writing and content decision

BeLikeNative

A competent technical user can build and self-host a useful Chrome-extension replacement (keyboard shortcuts, prompt templates, LLM calls) using existing open-source grammar projects as prior art; the vendor's scale, reviews and curated prompt packs are the main things you'd give up.

Open-source builds that already do this

Every project below is open source and already does this job today. Fork one, self-host it, or take the parts you need - the build prompt further down assumes an empty file, and this is the shortcut past that. Licences differ; check the one on each card before you ship. All BeLikeNative alternatives, with the arithmetic →

What a replacement has to do

  • Highlight text on a webpage → press a keyboard shortcut → send text to an LLM service → receive rewritten text → copy back to clipboard for paste.

What it still won’t have

  • Existing Chrome Web Store listing and reviews
  • Proprietary prompt pack curation and any server-side optimizations the vendor runs
  • Polished onboarding and analytics baked into the vendor's product

What remains hard

  • Product polish and ongoing maintenance

Runnable build prompt

Not run yet
Build a minimal BeLikeNative-style Chrome extension with a Node.js/Express backend and OpenAI (or compatible) LLM integration. Stack: Chrome extension (manifest v3) + React settings page, Node/Express API, SQLite for storing user prompt templates, and deployment on a $5/month VPS (or Vercel/Heroku). In-scope features: detect highlighted text, global keyboard shortcuts mapping to prompt templates, send text to backend which applies a template and calls the LLM, return rewritten text and copy to clipboard, UI to choose/create/save prompts, and basic analytics (counts). Out of scope: multi-language Mistake Atlas research, offline local models, and Chrome Web Store review process automation. Require robust error handling for network/LLM failures, telemetry opt-in, unit tests for backend prompt generation, and end-to-end tests for the extension shortcut flow.

The base comes from the verdict. Everything under it is a check that either happened or did not, and each one is a fact frozen in this record rather than a judgement made at render time - so the same evidence always produces the same number.
